The Green Party in Northern Ireland stands firmly in support of transgender rights

The Green Party in Northern Ireland stands firmly in support of transgender rights

The UK Supreme Court’s decision on the definition of a woman under the Equality Act 2010 has significant implications for gender rights across the UK, although the Act applies in GB but not in Northern Ireland. This ruling sparks concerns about increased discrimination against transgender individuals.
“The Green Party in Northern Ireland stands firmly in support of transgender rights,” said Mal O’Hara, Party Leader. “We are wary of efforts to define womanhood, as these have historically been used to restrict and marginalise women. It is telling that such scrutiny is rarely applied to definitions of manhood.”
We must continue to advocate for inclusive policies and laws that protect all individuals, regardless of their gender identity. Let’s stand together against discrimination and for a society that values equality, justice, and inclusivity for all.

Green Party Leader welcomes ban of executive parties from Belfast Pride

Green Party Leader welcomes ban of executive parties from Belfast Pride

Mal O'Hara, Green Party Leader said "This is a welcome decision by Belfast Pride. LGBTQ+ people have been betrayed and gaslit by the executive parties for too long. An lgbtq+ strategy has been promised since 2007 but never delivered. The most recent Programme for Government fails to mention lgbtq+ inequality beyond a vague commitment to bringing forward 'social strategies'. Funding for our life saving lgbtq+ organisations has been piecemeal and ad hoc rather than strategic and focused. Almost all progress on lgbtq+ equality has come from Westminster or the Courts. The final straw was the announcement of the puberty blocker ban via tweet, which removes healthcare from trans and non-binary young people meanwhile the Executive have done precious little on the crises of trans healthcare."
Mal continued "Pride started as a riot. It is our biggest public event to demonstrate for liberation, equality and celebration.  If the Executive Parties make progress on trans healthcare, fund our sector organisations, stands up to backlash and bring forward a strategy, then I will be the first to advocate welcoming these parties back."
Mal finished by saying "Pride is not a photo opportunity for political parties who have had power for 27 years and not used that power to make the lives of lgbtq+ people better."

Green Party welcome rejection of UUP anti-trans motion

Green Party welcome rejection of UUP anti-trans motion

Green Party Councillor Anthony Flynn said “I am glad that today's stunt by the Ulster Unionist Party has rightly failed to gain any traction in the assembly. The motion put forward by Doug Beattie in relation to Trans prisoners in the prison system is a distraction technique. LGBTQ people have been promised a strategy to address the inequalities our community faces since 2007. After 18 years we are still waiting. Progress on LGBTQ equality has come through the courts or the UK Government rather than our own local Assembly.”

Councillor Flynn continued “LGBTQ people experience hate crime, significant health inequalities in terms of mental health, sexual health, substance use, risk of homelessness and these inequalities are made worse by intolerance and inequality. That’s what the Assembly should be addressing, not stoking up culture wars for cheap politicking.”

Green Party reacts saying puberty blocker decision turns failure of our community into betrayal

Green Party reacts saying puberty blocker decision turns failure of our community into betrayal

Green Party Councillor Anthony Flynn said “When this temporary ban was announced in the summer, we and many activists argued that the executive should release the evidence that informed this decision. Now that the ban has been made indefinite, it should be released.”

Councillor Flynn continued “The Executive parties have failed LGBTQ+ people. They have promised us a strategy since 2007 to address the inequalities that our community face but it has never been delivered. We are particularly disappointed in Sinn Fein and the Alliance party who give much lip service to LGBTQ+ equality but have yet to use their 26 years in Government to improve our lives in any meaningful way. This decision turns failure into betrayal. We will not forget.”

Cllr Flynn reacts to PSNI decision to pull out of Belfast Pride

Cllr Flynn reacts to PSNI decision to pull out of Belfast Pride

"It is for the LGBTQ community to decide who takes part in our demonstrations, not the PSNI.
The PSNI should never have been involved in pride parades in the first place, pride always has been and remains a political protest, with deeply held connections to past movements of liberation from systemic injustices which the PSNI has played a full part in.
We only have to look a few years back to the BLM protests in Belfast and Derry where the PSNI's handling of those events warranted not just one but two highly critical reports from the police ombudsman and the policing board citing discrimination towards attendees of those demonstrations.
The current culture wars being stoked by the right-wing against our community, specifically against Trans & non-Binary folks are abhorrent, to help combat this trend prides across the UK are choosing campaigns similar to Belfast prides "Stand by your Trans" as a means of showing solidarity with those within our community who are under attack, for the PSNI to choose this particular campaign to pull support for pride shows clear as day their involvement with pride was only ever skin deep.
The PSNI has a lot of work to do to repair relationships with the LGBTQ community & other minority groups in Northern Ireland, superficial support is simply not good enough.
As reported Homophobic and Transphobic hate crimes are at their highest in recent years, it is unacceptable that the vast majority of these fail to end in prosecution, the authorities need to do more to deal with this disparity and increase confidence with the police."
