Job title:                   Constituency Officer           

Term:                        Full-Time Permanent - 37 hours per week.  

Salary:                      £24,195 (Grade 1) 

Reports to:               Rachel Woods MLA 

Job Location:          12 Hamilton Road, Bangor, BT20 4LE & Parliament                                             Buildings, Stormont.*

Job Summary 

  • Providing information/advice to constituents on range of issues and gathering relevant information to assist with resolving cases.
  • Managing and progressing a portfolio of casework appropriately and ensuring enquiries are dealt with quickly, sensitively and confidentially.
  • Retaining records and information confidentially and in line with GDPR.
  • Developing and implementing office systems/procedures and ensuring constituency office is fully equipped and stocked.
  • Responding to communication and enquiries from constituents, the media, lobbyists and pressure groups and drafting letters and correspondence.
  • Analysing patterns of enquiries and producing reports on constituency queries.
  • Preparing briefings for meetings.
  • Attending All Party Groups, constituency surgeries, tribunals and other meetings as appropriate on behalf of or with the MLA.
  • Organising and providing secretarial support for meetings, including writing minutes of meetings, when required.
  • Building relationships with business, community and other groups in constituency.
  • Other duties as required in support of the MLA carrying out their duties.

Person Specification 

  • Essential criteria
  • Educated to third level**
  • Minimum of one year’s experience in providing advice, casework or advice work.
  • Minimum of one year’s experience working with, or in, government, council and/or statutory agencies.
  • Minimum of one year’s experience working with, or in, voluntary and/or community organisations.
  • Understanding of the social security system, Universal Credit, PIP and housing system in NI.
  • Proven ability to use a variety of IT equipment and software packages, including: Microsoft Office suite and Outlook, as well as online communication platforms such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams.
  • Experience of working in an office environment.
  • Excellent teamwork, communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to show empathy and patience. 
  • Strong attention to detail, especially in written communications. 
  • Ability to take the initiative and work proactively to manage competing deadlines, to prioritise tasks and to work independently. 

 

Desirable criteria 

  • Keen interest and awareness of politics in Northern Ireland.
  • Sympathetic to the aims and values of the Green Party NI.
  • Good knowledge of the North Down constituency. 
  • Professionally trained in the social security and social housing system.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of the planning system in Northern Ireland.
