Clare Bailey MLA: NI Executive has brought NI Water and our infrastructure to the tipping point of failure

Wednesday 26 August 2020

Clare Bailey MLA has backed NI Water's call for urgent investment to stave off an infrastructure crisis and criticised the Executive for ignoring the problem despite repeated warnings of the inability of our water and sewerage infrastructure to cope with growing demand.

NI Water provider has said it needs £2.2 billion for capital investment between 2021-27, warning that new developments are being limited in 116 towns and cities.

Clare Bailey, Green Party NI Leader, said:

"NI Water has highlighted the need for urgent investment in our water infrastructure for some time now. These warnings have fallen on the deaf ears of successive Executive Ministers. As a result, we have come to the tipping point and a crisis is on the cards.

"We have reached the point where all new non-essential construction should be halted until NI Water's capital projects are properly funded. That means prioritising the construction of affordable housing, particularly social housing, in areas of need over less urgent commercial developments.

"I reiterate NI Water's warning of a health, economic and environmental crisis if the Executive continues to ignore the need for realistic infrastructure investment."
