Susan Glass: Robust action required on deliberate wildfire ignition

Thursday 23 April 2020

Green Party NI West Tyrone representative Susan Glass has said that those igniting wildfires should face the harshest of penalties.

Susan Glass said: “Wildfires rarely start naturally. Two major wildfires outside Omagh last weekend were attributed to waste or vegetation having been set alight.

“Wildfires are destructive and dangerous particularly at a time when frontline workers including first responders should be focused on the public health crisis before us.

“Valuable natural habitats are destroyed when wildfires burn and animals often die as smoke and flames spread quickly across large tracts of land.

“The good weather is set to continue into the weekend and with quarantine continuing, I’m making a direct appeal for people not to burn waste or vegetation.

“I’d also expect the PSNI to make make the prevention of wildfires a service priority in rural areas and take robust action against anyone found to have been burning rubbish or vegetation.”
