Green Party MLA Rachel Woods has called for the immediate implementation of the Victims Pensions Scheme after a judge ruled that the system had been deliberately stymied payments to victims.
Rachel Woods MLA, who sits on Stormont's Justice Committee, said: "I welcome the judgement today and I expect it will be met with some relief amongst victims and their families. However, it must be said that its an aberration that victims were driven to take legal action to force the hand of the deputy First Minister.
"I want to see the scheme up and running as soon as practically possible and Westminster to live up to its obligations to Northern Ireland's citizens by funding the scheme in its entirety."
Rachel Woods added:
"Victims of the conflict are being failed again and again. The Victims Pension Scheme is supposedly supported by all local parties and the Westminster Government yet there is a lack of political will around making it happen.
"This is another demonstration of how our politics is failing victims. The Executive and Westminster government have been unable to deliver in terms of the most basic requirements. Politicians should never have been given a say over this - like having your abuser set your reparations.
"Only an independent process on legacy issues has the potential to finally deliver for these victims and their families."
