Rachel Woods MLA has welcomed confirmation that the hospitality sector will be allowed to open from 03 July, pending no increase in the R rate, but added that the safety of workers and customers can’t be compromised in any rush to reopen.
The Green Party MLA said: “The hospitality sector is a huge employer in Northern Ireland, particularly among young people.
“It’s great news that people can return to their jobs - but it must be a safe and supported return to work. There will be new challenges across the hospitality sector and workers must be helped through the changes.
“Workers will have to adhere to social distancing while adjusting to new ways of working with customers so adequate training and protective equipment must be provided by employers.
“Creativity is needed if we are to create safe and relaxing spaces for people to enjoy a drink or bite to eat. The recovery from the Covid crisis needs to be a green recovery. That means reallocation of road space and pedestrianised zones which allow premises to use pavements for safe outdoor seating whilst ensuring our public spaces are accessible for everyone.”
Rachel continued: “The Executive is pushing ahead with reopening plans with little regard to the impact of lack of childcare options.
“The reality is that there will many people unable to return to work because they’ve been left without childcare options - this must put in place before further reopening takes place.”
