Woods welcomes Trade Union Freedom Bill

The Green Party NI has welcomed the Trade Union Freedom Bill to the Assembly, which was introduced to the Assembly this week.

The Green Party MLA for North Down, Rachel Woods MLA said: “Over the course of the pandemic, we have all been reminded of the importance of protecting workers’ rights, and the key role trade unions have in upholding them. All workers have a right to unionise and organise their workplaces, and it is our duty as MLAs to ensure that the law protects those rights.

“Northern Ireland’s outdated trade union legislation is long overdue reform, and I welcome this Bill’s provisions to modernise the current law by introducing electronic voting for union ballots, and simplifying the bureaucracy which can restrict employees from exercising their right to strike.

“Trade unions play a vital role in the fight to ensure that all employees receive fair pay and conditions, and I support the members of NIPSA and the UCU currently on strike across Northern Ireland.

“The Green Party NI has long advocated for improving workplace rights in Northern Ireland, from supporting a living wage to my Safe Leave Bill, which will guarantee all victims and survivors of domestic abuse paid time off work.”
