Green Party MLA Woods has said that she is deeply disappointed that there is still no clarity on an extension to the free school meals scheme with only days to go before the current scheme comes to a close.
The MLA for North Down said: “It’s deeply disappointing and depressing that this vital scheme is yet to be extended as we enter into its final week.
“Northern Ireland is now the only devolved region yet to sign off on free school meal summer payments; even the Tories saw fit to put arrangements in place, albeit following personal testimony of holiday hunger from footballer Marcus Rashford.
“I asked the Education Minister a question today as to whether there has been Executive sign off on the free school meals extension scheme. The Minister indicated that there was a desire to sign off on the scheme but gave no further detail on whether there was actual agreement on the part of the Executive.
“Families in receipt of these payments are worried about a summer of holiday hunger. They deserve certainty and clarity so they know where they stand and can manage their budgets.”
