Urgent action needed on water pollution crisis – Bailey

Clare Bailey MLA has commented on a new report which reveals that all of Northern Ireland waterways have failed to meet the basic ‘good’ standard.

The Green Party NI Leader said: “This represents a disturbing decline of Northern Ireland’s already shamefully poor record. Northern Ireland is already the twelfth worst region in the world for biodiversity loss, and these figures indicate that the situation is on track to get even worse.

“Minister Poots is overseeing a public health and environmental disaster. The low quality of Northern Ireland's rivers, lakes and coastal waters is a damning indictment of our government's destructive approach to human health and environmental protection. The Minister and the NI Environment Agency have serious questions to answer on how pollution in Northern Ireland has been allowed to get this bad.

“The policies of the five-party Executive, particularly in relation to agriculture, environment and the economy, has created a situation where our air, water and land are heavily polluted. With Ministers failing to rule out granting new mining and fracking licences, it’s clear that the radical change in approach we need is not forthcoming from the Executive parties.”
