Clare Bailey MLA

Tuesday 05 November 2019

Leader of the Green Party NI Clare Bailey MLA has expressed her relief at the passing of long-overdue legislation allowing compensation payments to be made to survivors of institutional abuse.

Clare Bailey said: “It’s a bittersweet day for the victims and survivors of historical institutional abuse. These people have waited so long for redress and suffered false dawn after false dawn.

”I wrote to the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, Julian Smith, last week asking him to act urgently before Parliament is dissolved.

“The campaigners have fought long and hard and I’m delighted to see them in London in what should be the final stages of their campaign for redress.

”I pay tribute to the campaigners who have shown great dignity and perseverance through this long and painful period.”
