Short term gaps plugged but Councils face funding crisis

Tuesday 19 May 2020

Green Party NI Deputy Leader Mal O’Hara has commented on Communities Minister Deirdre Hargey’s funding package for local councils:

Mal, who is a Belfast City Councillor, said:

“Minister Hargey’s announcement will bring some relief for local Councils - it has been well documented that several of our Councils are on the brink of collapse.

“However, the £20million package will only stave off collapse in the short term. Councils must have access to the type of un-ring fenced support all other Councils across UK regions have received.

“Council services and facilities are under threat as a result of this unprecedented situation - the impact of which could be sorely felt by our communities.

“Minister Hargey’s intervention is welcome but she should also work with NILGA and SOLACE toexplore further financial and legislative measures to ensure that Councils are not put in a situation where services have to be cut or facilitates closed in the face of this pandemic.”
