Rachel Woods MLA - Scattergun approach to easing lockdown restrictions undermines public confidence

Wednesday 24 June 2020

Green MLA Rachel Woods is becoming increasingly concerned that a scattergun approach from the NI Executive could undermine public confidence in the easing of lockdown measures.

The Executive yesterday (Tuesday 23 June) published an update on it’s five-step Coronavirus Recovery Plan.

Rachel Woods MLA has said the update shows that the plan hasn’t been followed in a linear way with a scattergun approach evident.

Rachel Woods said: “There are glaring anomalies between the Executive’s Coronavirus Recovery Plan and what has actually happened.

“The five stages of the plan haven’t been followed in a linear way and the recovery plan isn’t joined up with, for example, non essential retail reopened before restrictions on childcare provision have been relaxed.

“Reopening has been fast tracked for certain sectors - for example, the reopening of restaurants, cafes and pubs was set out as step 5 of the plan, yet they will open before non-contact sports training becomes permissible - which was set out in step 2.

“I appreciate that the Executive is making decisions based on medical and scientific evidence and I support that approach.

“However, the medical and scientific evidence is not available to the public. This, coupled with the Executive’s approach to reopening, creates the impression that the plan is being rewritten on the hoof, according to which sector can shout the loudest.

“The lack of supporting, detailed guidance even covering the basics makes it increasingly difficult for those sectors who can re-open to do so with confidence around safety.”

 Rachel concluded:

“The Executive must match their decision making with publicly accessible medical and scientific evidence, as well as detailed guidance to maintain confidence in their Coronavirus Recovery Plan.”
