Rachel Woods MLA has joined a cross party call for Westminster, in the absence of an Assembly, to legislate to protect low income and disabled families from a looming welfare crisis.

The North Down MLA stressed that the best way to protect people is through the restoration of a functioning, power-sharing Executive at Stormont.

Rachel said:

“We are hurtling towards the cliff edge with welfare mitigations due to run out in March 2020. Many families are struggling financially at present but we know that worse is to come with mitigations coming to an end.

“It’s not good enough for decision makers to sit on their hands and accept that Stormont will not be revived and payments will come to an end.

“That’s why I’ve joined a cross party group of MLAs to call on the Secretary of State to legislate to extend welfare mitigations beyond March 2020.”
