Rachel Woods MLA: Academic selection wrong at any time but never more so than during a pandemic

Monday 04 January 2020

Green Party MLA Rachel Woods has said that academic selection at 11 is wrong at any time, but never more so than during a pandemic.

The North Down MLA said:

"The Green Party opposes academic selection for primary school children.

"Sitting the tests at the height of a pandemic is a new level of irresponsibility and affront to the health and the well-being of young people and their families.

"I have been contacted by many parents over these last number of weeks with serious concerns about the approach taken by the Executive. Guidance has been confused and lacking in detail.

"It's clear that the virus transmission rate is out of control and we are facing the threat of new strains within our communities. The Education Minister must quickly review the facilitation of unnecessary testing, especially at this dangerous time."
