Green Party MLA Rachel Woods has reacted to changes to the furlough scheme, as announced by the Chancellor today:
“Changes to the furlough scheme will have a massive impact on our local economy and people’s lives. I am concerned that workers will be exposed to risk and possibly return to work before it is safe to do so.
“There are many industries and sectors that will be negatively impacted by changes to the furlough scheme but I am particularly concerned about the impact on retail, tourism and hospitality.
“The tourism, retail and hospitality sectors are huge employers across Northern Ireland and these changes may be the final straw leading to closure for many businesses.
“I have asked Economy Minister, Diane Dodds to consider biding for departmental resources to facilitate topping-up government contributions should they fall below 80%.”
Rachel concluded:
“Ultimately, a Universal Basic Income is the only way to protect workers rights and assist in the green recovery.”
