Rachel Woods calls for legacy victims & survivors to be front & centre

Monday 26 October 2020

Green Party NI MLA and Justice Committee Member Rachel Woods has said that the Westminster Government needs to show commitment to victims and survivors of the Troubles.

The comments come on the back of a NI Affairs Committee Interim Report on the government approach to addressing legacy issues in Northern Ireland.

Rachel Woods said: "Victims and survivors should be front and centre of any proposals around dealing with the legacy of our past.

"The Government must bring forward legislation which reflects the core principals of the Stormont House Agreement.

"To date, government has made little to no progress or detail on its newest approach to legacy after the two-page statement was published in March. I'm deeply concerned that the Government approach has been marked by a lack of meaningful engagement and collaboration with victims' groups and other key stakeholders as well as reneging on its agreement in New Decade, New Approach.

"Victims of our legacy are suffering today and every day. They can't afford for the government to unilaterally scrap agreed direction of travel then sit on their hands for seven months."
