Green Party Councillor for Bangor Central, Stephen Dunlop has said that now is the time to get behind local, independent retailers and suppliers.
Stephen’s call comes as online retail giant Amazon posted bumper profits with people turning to online shopping during lockdown.
Stephen, former Hollywood Town Centre Manager and NI Chair of the Association of Town and City Management said:
“Independent retailers and businesses are fighting for their future as a result of this pandemic and the associated economic free fall.
“I’m urging people to shop local where possible and support our independent businesses and shops as they go above and beyond in a bid to serve our communities and stay afloat.
“The giant retailers can take financial hits and shocks. In fact, many are enjoying bumper profits with people shopping online or stocking up in supermarkets.
“I’d like to see a shift towards the local supply chain where possible. Our independent greengrocers, bakers and greengrocers are offering great, fresh produce with smaller premises making social distancing easier and delivery an option.
“Furthermore, if you shop online with artisan producers and small brands the problems for workers in some huge warehouses are bypassed.
“Many people are relying on food parcels and jobs have been lost so anyone with disposal income is in a fortunate position.
“I’m urging that people direct disposable income towards our independent suppliers and shop local as much as possible, supporting the life blood of our towns, villages and city centres.”
