Green Party NI leader Clare Bailey has commented on the instigation of an independent investigation into Mother and Baby Homes and Magdalene Laundries in Northern Ireland.
Clare Bailey MLA said:
“This is an important day for victims and survivors of mother and baby homes and our society as a whole.
“It may also be a difficult day for victims and survivors and I can only imagine the trauma that they carry through life.
“The recommendation of an independent investigation is a welcome development and long overdue.
“Particularly, I welcome the recommendation that an independent investigation will be co-designed by victims and survivors.
“People have suffered in silence for too long. Victims and survivors were abused then ignored for decades, their pain and suffering dismissed in a continuation of abuse by church and state.
“Today marks the beginning of the process for victims to been seen, to be heard and for their pain and suffering to be acknowledged.”
Clare Bailey MLA continued:
“It’s important that support services are immediately put in place for victims and survivors.
“Let’s act with the humanity that victims and survivors were denied for so long and establish support services, assisting their engagement in what’s likely to be a difficult but important process.”
