Mal O’Hara: Marriage equality registration a huge step

Monday 13 January 2020

Green Party NI Deputy Leader Malachai O’Hara has commented on the development that same sex couples can register to marry meaning that the first ceremonies will take place in February.

Malachai O’Hara said:

“This is another huge step on the road to LGBTQ equality and shows that love can win out.

“It’s an exciting day for many couples who can plan for their wedding and have their marriage recognised as equal.

“However, there are a number of issues to deal with to ensure that couples in Northern Ireland have the same rights as those in other jurisdictions. We are still awaiting clarity for those wishing to convert civil partnership to marriage and how religious same sex marriages will operate.

“This is an important milestone and with a returned Assembly, there is much to do to on LGBTQ equality.

Trans healthcare, inclusive sex education, IVF access, hate crime review and the sexual orientation strategy which has been promised since 2007 must finally come forward”

“Today however is a day for celebration and to say loud and proud that Love Won.”
