Justice Committee Member Rachel Woods MLA has expressed concern at the length of time before the Domestic Abuse Bill is due to come into law.

The time-frame for the Domestic Abuse Bill was set out in an Executive Legislation announcement yesterday (Monday 10 February).

Rachel Woods MLA said: “Domestic abuse is on the rise across Northern Ireland with almost 32,000 incidents recorded by police between 2018 and 2019.

“The recent inquest into the murders of Giselle Marimon-Herrera and her daughter Allison illustrates the dangerous and devastating impact of domestic abuse.

“I welcome the announcement from the Justice Minister that the drafted bill will be introduced, building on the work of former Justice Minister Claire Sugden and informed by the sector."

Rachel continued:

“However, I am concerned that lives remain at risk until such times as the legislation becomes operational.”
