Justice Minster must prioritise implementation of Gillen recommendations

Friday 10 July 2020

Green Party MLA and Justice Committee member Rachel Woods has said that delays to the implementation of the Gillen review recommendations are a source of frustration.

Rachel Woods said: “The Department for Justice has acknowledged that the Gillen recommendations are not being implemented to schedule.
“The delays are deeply frustrating and concerning. The department has stated that Covid 19 has slowed down the work of the department.
“Ironically, the pandemic has presented particular issues for people suffering abuse, including sexual abuse and violence. The implementation of the Gillen recommendations is more important now than ever before.
“I’d urge Justice Minister Naomi Long to step in and prioritise the much needed and long awaited changes to our criminal justice system as recommended by Justice Gillen.”
