Clare Bailey MLA has responded to reports that the Department for the Economy has modelled significant cuts to Further Education and Higher Education funding.
The Green Party NI Leader said: “It’s deeply concerning that the Department appears to be considering measures including halving the number of apprenticeships, ending higher level apprenticeships, scrapping the Education Maintenance Allowance, and raising university tuition fees by almost 60%.
“It’s time for the Executive to invest in our young people, not cut funding for their education and training opportunities. These proposals will force more young people to leave Northern Ireland for education or work, at a time when we need them to stay and help our economy rebuild from the pandemic.
“Now is the time to increase investment in training and upskilling to ensure that Northern Ireland can take full advantage of the green and sustainable jobs which will be created as we move to net-zero.
“The fact that these massive cuts to our young people’s future are even being considered demonstrates the five-party Executive’s short-sightedness and failure to deliver for Northern Ireland.”
