Green Party MLA encourages businesses to apply for support schemes

Monday 20 April 2020
Commenting on the Job Retention (Furlough) Scheme and the Business Grant Scheme, both launched today, Rachel Woods MLA said:
“I’d urge all eligible businesses to apply for the £25,000 Business Grant Scheme, despite technical problems experienced today.
“The delays and problems surrounding the launch of the online support portal for the hospitality, retail and tourism industries are incredibly frustrating for people who are in serious need of this payment as a lifeline.
“Many have already taken out personal loans to keep their heads above water. This has placed incredible stress on employers and business owners, as well as their employees. It also means additional financial burdens.
“The Scottish system has worked well and quickly with grants already paid and HMRC were able to process 67,000 furlough claims in 30 minutes earlier today.
“Minister Dodds must move to ensure that today’s technical problems don’t continue and are resolved as soon as possible. Payments must be made promptly and efficiently - businesses and people depend on it.”
Rachel concluded:

“The Job Retention Scheme for furloughed workers is also available online from today. Businesses should apply as soon as possible.”
