Gaza de-escalation & a route to peace urgently needed - Rachel Woods MLA

Monday 17 May 2021

Green Party MLA Rachel Woods spoke in the Assembly chamber this morning to call for an end to the conflict raging in Gaza.

The North Down MLA was speaking during an Assembly Matter of the Day as the humanitarian crisis mounts.

Rachel Woods MLA said:

"Every effort must be made to end all attacks and forms of aggression, address the underlying causes and hold those responsible fully accountable.

"De-escalation and a route to peace can only be achieved with the full realisation of Palestinian rights and the end of Israel’s systematic discrimination against Palestinians in Israel and the occupied Palestinian Territory.
"In addition to procuring an end of bombing, rocketing and violence, it is time for the international community to play an actual meaningful role and step up to events in Israel and Palestine.

"This is not the first escalation of tension and violence. This is not the first time we are witnessing the senseless and horrific murder of people. The violence is following similar patterns that we have seen before, reminiscent to the horrific hostilities from 2008, 2012 and 2014.

"There must be full compliance with international law. There must be a genuine peace process otherwise, people will continue to suffer when the international community's attention is elsewhere."

Rachel Woods MLA concluded:

"There must be negotiations based on the core principles of international law, justice and the end of all discrimination. Only then can a process aimed at a secure and lasting peace be built."
