Executive should make press conferences with young people happen

Thursday 03 December 2020

Green Party MLA Rachel Woods has urged the First Minister and Deputy First Minister to follow through on their commitment to hold a press conference for children and young people.

Executive Office Ministers had agreed to meet with representatives of the Northern Ireland Youth Forum but unfortunately the engagement was cancelled.

Rachel Woods, along with other political champions, has written to the First and Deputy First Ministers to urge them to meet with the Northern Ireland Youth Forum with a view to initiating youth press conferences.

Press conferences are aimed at addressing specific questions or issues that young people may have around the pandemic and how government decisions affect their lives.

Rachel Woods MLA said: "The most recent Northern Ireland Youth Survey shows that young people believe that their voices are not being heard during this pandemic.

"It's critically important that we listen to the voices of our children and young people. There are so many factors impacting their lives at present, between climate breakdown, housing, jobs, education Brexit and Covid.

"Good decision making is inclusive and informed. That's why I'm urging the First and Deputy First Ministers to meet with the NI Youth Forum as soon as possible with a view to establishing Youth Press Conferences as soon as is practicable."
