Green Party NI Education Spokesperson Cllr Simon Lee has commented as Education Minister Peter Weir reversed his policy of using standardisation in the calculation of AS and A Level results:
Councillor Lee, who is a teacher by profession, said:
“The Education Minister has made this U turn as a result of pressure from teachers, parents and pupils. Credit to them for demanding an equitable resolution to this fiasco.
“It’s been a fiasco that was entirely foreseeable since problems with standardisation began to emerge with the publication of results in Scotland.
“Many students have been through a horrible ordeal as Peter Weir wobbled his way through this matter.
“Education is devolved in Northern Ireland and our Minister is tasked with making decisions based on the best interests of our young people here.
“Peter Weir has failed to protect these young people from disadvantage as he claims he wants to do. Instead, many have been dealing with despair, worry and distress as a result of his lack of leadership.
“The Education Minister must focus on his obligations to the people of Northern Ireland rather than weighing in behind a Prime Minster bumbling his way through crisis to calamity in responding to this pandemic.”
