Green Party Councillor for Botanic, Aine Groogan, is hopeful that the future of Writer’s Square is a little more secure after Belfast City Council voted to recognise the significance of Writer's Square as a public and civic space and a place of historical significance.
Cllr Aine Groogan said: "Writer's Square holds a very special place in the heart and soul of the city of Belfast. It is a place of celebration, it has been a place of protest, of congregation and it is an important open space. We need public space to be retained for public use. Particularly as we look forward to building back better from this pandemic.
"I’m pleased that Belfast City Council supported my motion to recognise the significance of Writer’s Square. Belfast City Council will now write to the Department for Communities to ensure that any development in the area ensures that Writer's Square is respected as a space for civic celebration and lawful protest and, importantly, that public space stays as public space.”
