Cllr Aine Groogan disheartened at Holylands disorder

Friday 26 June 2020

Green Party Cllr for Botanic, Aine Groogan has criticised those responsible for anti-social behaviour in the Holylands area of South Belfast last night.

Cllr Groogan said: “Police made two arrests in the Holylands last night (Thursday 25 June) following reports of disorder and anti-social behaviour.

“It’s really disheartening that police resources were tied up in the Holylands last night when the policing priority forofficers city wide is to locate missing teenager Noah Donohoe.

“The Covid-19 pandemic is still very much with us and people gathering in large numbers and drinking heavily presents a real risk to public safety, particularly if they are travelling between addresses.

“Police made arrests last night and they will continue to make arrests if criminality continues. That’s why I’m appealing to leaseholders and their friends to show some sense and restraint.

“I’m also continuing to appeal to parents and responsible adults to exercise their influence and authority to ensure that young people and students don’t use the Holylands in a way that causes distress to others.

“Reportsof anti-social behaviour in the area have increased across the last few weeks and local residents cannot be subjected to a summer of torment.

“People need to take responsibility for their behaviour but we also need proper enforcement from the Council, particularly around the night time noise service, which is remains suspended.
