Climate Action APG to discuss Just Energy Transition

The Northern Ireland Assembly’s All-Party Group on Climate Action will meet tomorrow (Friday 29 October) on the theme of energy. The Green Party MLA for North Down, Rachel Woods, chair of the APG said, “This important discussion about how Northern Ireland’s energy sector can adapt to deliver a net-zero future comes as world leaders prepare to gather in Glasgow for the COP26 Summit.

"As global commitments to climate action become more ambitious, Northern Ireland remains the only part of the UK and Ireland with no climate legislation and no net-zero target. It’s time to end this international embarrassment and pass the cross-party net-zero Climate Change Bill.”

The topics and speakers will include:

  • Mapping a Just Energy Transition in Northern Ireland – John Barry, Centre for Sustainability, Equality and Climate Action, QUB
  • Achieving Zero: Pathway to a zero-carbon electricity system in Northern Ireland – Steven Agnew, Renewable NI
  • Organising visions in Geothermal Energy Roadmap Development – Joseph Ireland, Centre for Sustainability, Equality and Climate Action, QUB

Next month's APG meeting will be a follow-up from COP, looking at the energy strategy and Common Purpose Legacy Programme.
