Leader of the Green Party NI Clare Bailey MLA has commented on the Northern Ireland carrier bag levy annual statistics for 2019/20.
Clare Bailey MLA: "The drop in carrier bag use is a positive development, with 13 million fewer bags dispensed across Northern Ireland last year. It's a seven year on year drop in plastic bag usage which is a welcome trend.
"People get it - they don't want to use plastic bags because they understand the impact of plastic pollution on our natural world. Between 2 and 5 per cent of all plastic waste produced annually on land ultimately ends up in the sea. The impact of this pollution on marine life and human health is devastating.
"However, it's not easy for citizens to make the right choices when we are deluged with plastic packaging and products. Generally, corporations and big business aren't doing their bit to reduce plastic pollution and the impact it has on our environment.
"The polluters pays principle must apply to plastic pollution. We need to see policies which address marine pollution by tackling plastic production in the first instance."
