Clare Bailey - Plant more of the right trees in the right places

Monday 02 March 2020

Green Party NI Leader Clare Bailey has welcomed plans to plant more trees across Northern Ireland as announced by DAERA Minister Edwin Poots but stressed that it must be the right trees in the right places.

Clare Bailey MLA said: “Planting more trees is positive and I was glad to hear Minister Poots talking about afforestation plans on behalf of the Department.

“Native trees provide a home for our birds and wildlife. They absorb carbon and improve air quality. They reduce storm water run-off which may prevent flooding.

“Yet, Northern Ireland has the least amount of woodland in the European Union with just 8% cover. The EU recommends 16% cover.

“It’s vital that we plant the right trees in the right places. For example, planting trees on peat lands or marginal grasslands may have the damaging effect of drying out the soil, whereas peat in its natural state can act as a powerful carbon sink.

“I look forward to seeing these plans put in place and more of the right trees in the right places.”
