Green Party NI Leader Clare Bailey MLA has said that the new immigration plans from the UK Government pose a particular threat to Northern Ireland.

The points-based system would mean low-skilled workers would not receive visas after the UK leaves the EU.

Clare Bailey MLA said:

“Hostile Tory migration policies do not work for Northern Ireland and will have serious consequences for our economy, particularly within the agri-food, hospitality, tourism and social care sectors.

“Low paid workers in these sectors are hardworking and make an important contribution to our communities. We need people from across and beyond Europe to continue to come here to live, to work – strengthening our economy and society.”

Clare continued:

“There are also questions about the status of people who live and work on either side of the border.

“The free movement of people has brought real benefits and this hostile migration policy poses a particular threat to Northern Ireland.”
