Green Party NI leader Clare Bailey MLA has called on the NI Executive to take action to close businesses if they cannot ensure the safety of their workers.

Clare Bailey MLA said: “Workers have been in touch with myself and my party colleague Rachel Woods to express serious concerns about their working conditions.

“Workers have been forced to work together without the requisite social distancing and others haven’t been provided with the necessary protective clothing,

“Pushing people into unsafe working environments puts lives at risk. It puts further pressure on our frontline healthcare workers. It negates efforts made elsewhere to curb the spread of the virus.

“The government response to this pandemic has so far focused on assisting businesses. It’s time to put the protection of our citizens and workers front and centre.

“Government must introduce a Universal Basic Income to enable our citizens to stay home and stay safe.

“People need security through freezes on rents and secure utility supplies. We need a package for self employed workers so that people can make the right choices.”
