Speaking after the Assembly passed a motion calling for a comprehensive and bespoke agreement between the European Union and the UK Government to align sanitary and phytosanitary standards, Green Party NI Leader Clare Bailey MLA said: “Brexit has been an unmitigated disaster for Northern Ireland. Brexit and the fallout happened to Northern Ireland without our consent. This has been a European Union and UK Government process, and the most we can do is raise concerns and hope that someone listens.
“The Protocol offers the potential for Northern Ireland to be in the unique place to benefit. But it doesn’t help that the Prime Minister fails to see the potential, for example when he recommends that British cheesemakers relocate to Europe rather than NI to access EU markets.
“It is a sad reflection of the power of our institutions in this situation that the most we can do is to debate the issue and hope that the decision makers listen.”
