Clare Bailey MLA condemns arson attack on Belfast Multi Cultural Association

Friday 15 January 2021

Green Party NI leader and South Belfast MLA Clare Bailey has condemned an arson attack at a building housing the Belfast Multi Cultural Association (BMCA) was confirmed as a deliberate hate crime.

Clare Bailey MLA said: "This was a disgusting and dangerous attack on a community association doing important work within the community.  The arson attack could have resulted in death or serious injury and it's fair to say that the people behind this attack didn't know or care if anyone was inside the building at the time.

"This community association has been putting together food parcels in recent weeks. They've been helping people through the Covid crisis and their volunteers have shown selflessness in the middle of the pandemic that has had a disproportionate impact on black and minority ethnic communities.

"Compare that with the reckless and disgusting behaviour of whoever was responsible for this attack. I'd urge anyone who knows anything about this hate crime or saw any suspicious activity in the area last night to contact the PSNI so that the courts can deal with those responsible.

"I believe that the vast, vast majority of people across South Belfast are fair minded and peaceful. I know that they will be disgusted by this attack and will be keen to support the work of the cultural centre in a practical and safe way.

"I look forward to helping and seeing the Belfast Multi Cultural Association get back on its feet to continue their brilliant work as soon as possible."
