Clare Bailey MLA has urged the Environment Minister to be brave enough to implement changes to address climate breakdown in the same way that the Executive demonstrated bravery and fortitude in dealing with COVID-19.
The Green Party Leader’s comments came as Environment Minister Edwin Poots made a Ministerial Statement on “Green Growth” in the Assembly today (Tuesday 23 June).
Clare Bailey said: “I’m concerned at the tunnel vision approach towards growth within this strategy - is the relentless pursuit of economic growth the only lens through which we view our future?
“There must come a time when we ask how much growth can our planet sustain.”
Clare described climate breakdown as an emergency primed to destroy and destabilise economies in the same manner in which the Covid crisis has. She went on to urge Minister Poots to:
“Be brave enough to implement the changes needed to halt climate breakdown and turn the growth obsessed Green Growth strategy into a genuine Green New Deal.”
