Bailey calls on MLAs to reject anti-choice Bill

Speaking ahead of the Consideration Stage debate of the Severe Fetal Impairment Abortion Bill in the Assembly tomorrow (Tuesday 14th December 2021), Clare Bailey MLA has called on MLAs to oppose the Bill.

The Green Party NI Leader said: “This Bill is a shameful attempt to roll back women’s hard-won rights.

“The UN’s Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) found that the lack of abortion provision in Northern Ireland constitutes a form of violence against women. The NI Human Rights Commission has clearly stated that this Bill is incompatible with our human rights obligations.

“Women need more than empty words from politicians. Politicians must vote down this Bill. Political parties’ commitments to tackle violence against women and to protect human rights are meaningless if their MLAs do not oppose this Bill.

“This Bill is nothing more than an attempt to control women and girls by denying their fundamental rights. I call on all MLAs to use their vote in the Assembly to defend women’s rights and to ‘Kill the Bill’.”
