Green Party Councillor Aine Groogan will call on Belfast Councillors to support safe access to healthcare clinics through a motion this evening (Tuesday 01 June).
Cllr Groogan has brought the motion as a response to an escalation in harassment and intimidation at healthcare clinics with support from Ulster Unionist Councillor Sonia Copeland.
Councillor Aine Groogan said: “This motion serves as measure of support and solidarity with women who have been harassed and intimidated around clinics.
“It also serves as a rejection of the abhorrent tactics of people co-ordinating the bullying and intimidation. Theirs is a concerted campaign, including at premises in Belfast.
“The harassment and intimidation also inflicts significant and lasting trauma on people on the receiving end.
“I’ve asked Council to support a proposal from Clare Bailey MLA to create safe zones are healthcare clinics. The safe zone proposal has been developed through a Private Members Bill (PMB) from Clare Bailey MLA.
“Every citizen should expect privacy and respect as they visit healthcare providers. This PMB is about ensuring safeguarding and compassion. I hope and expect Belfast City Councillors will support it this evening.”
