Rachel Woods MLA, Chair of the Assembly All Party Group on cycling, has responded to Nichola Mallon’s Ministerial Statement on support for active travel.
Rachel said:
“I am delighted that the Infrastructure Minister has announced a range of measures aimed at promoting active travel.
“The measures included lookingat reallocation of road space for walkers and cyclists and pop up cycle lanes.
“The Green Party has long advocated for increased investment in active travel and recently our Deputy Leader Mal O’Hara made the call for reallocation of road space, in light of the COVID pandemic.
“I’m pleased that the Minister has endorsed these policies. Climate breakdown can be only be addressed if we work in collaboration and the Green Recovery will take a collective effort.
”Ultimately, this is about creating a healthier and happier future for our citizens. So, pop up cycle lanes must become permanent and it’s time to rethink our obsession with the private car.
“We can’t seek to return to business as usual when it was leading us towards catastrophic climate breakdown.”
