Westminster deal a missed opportunity to put people first

Monday 26 June 2017

Commenting on the signing of a “confidence and supply” deal between the DUP and Conservative Party, Steven Agnew MLA said:

“This is a deal dominated by tax breaks for big business and so is a missed opportunity to put people first by prioritising public service spending.

“Any money allocated to health and education could be undone by the reduction in corporation tax, which would cost around £200 million.

“The scale of the challenges faced by our schools and hospitals demonstrates the need for long term, adequate public service funding.

“We need all of the traditional parties to put Westminster dealings to one side for now and restore the Assembly and Executive.

The Green Party leader concluded:

“Our schools and hospitals are under great pressure – Westminster deals will matter little if the Stormont stalemate isn’t resolved.”
