We need to remain GMO free says Clare Bailey

Deputy Leader of the Green Party Clare Bailey will be taking part in a discussion on genetically modified food on Sunday 7 June 2015.

The discussion will follow a screening of the film ‘GMO OMG’ at the Black Box.

Clare Bailey said,

“I am delighted to be taking part in this discussion that will raise awareness of genetically modified (GM) crops and the fact that they are widespread in the food we eat.

““The UK does not currently have mass planting of GM crops and I would like it to stay that way. I believe there needs to be much more independent research into the effects that GM-based crops have on both the environment and us.

“It is not enough to say that there are no risks. There needs to be full independent research carried out on how GM crops affect the environment, as once we allow mass planting of GM crops, there will be no turning back.

“Furthermore, as a consumer, I like to know what I eat. There needs to be clear, unambiguous front of pack labelling so that I can choose whether or not to eat a foodstuff containing GMO.

“I would urge DARD Minister Michelle O’Neill to work towards ensuring that the island of Ireland remains GMO free”.
