Supreme Court Brexit ruling upholds democratic principles

Tuesday 24 January 2017

The Green Party for NI has welcomed the Supreme Court decision:

Steven Agnew MLA, a plaintiff on the Brexit case commented.

“I am pleased that the Supreme Court has decided that Parliament will have its say on the triggering of Article 50.

“This decision upholds democratic principles and provides an opportunity for consideration of the specific circumstances of Northern Ireland.

“It is important that all Northern Ireland’s MPs and Lords do their job and ensure that our special status is recognised as the only UK region that will have a land border with an EU member state.

“This is an opportunity that cannot be wasted.

“Indeed Green Party MP Caroline Lucas has already signalled her intent to oppose the premature triggering of Article 50. I welcome this Green voice in Westminster.

Steven Agnew MLA concluded:

“Despite the Supreme Court rejecting the devolved institutions argument, today represents a victory for democracy and the rule of law.”
