Support for abortion law reform overwhelming

Friday 16 June 2017

The results of the Northern Ireland Life and Times Survey has shown overwhelming support for the reform of Northern Ireland’s abortion laws.

Clare Bailey commented on the new findings:

“The people have sent a clear message to legislators – abortion should be decriminalised in Northern Ireland.

“The Life and Times Survey is a rigorous piece of academic work which should inform policy makers going forward.
“The state is failing to meet basic human rights standards by continuing to criminalise women who seek an abortion here.
“The UK government must be held to account for its failure to meet these international standards.”
The South Belfast MLA continued:
“Meanwhile, women continue to suffer across Northern Ireland in the absence of free, safe and legal reproductive healthcare.”
