Steven Agnew MLA in Westminster

Support for a People’s Vote has shifted up several notches

Tuesday 13 November 2018

Steven Agnew MLA has said that support for a People’s Vote on any final Brexit deal, “has shifted up several notches”.

The Green Party leader’s comments came as he spent yesterday (Monday 12 November) meeting a number of Westminster party leaders, including Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and Vince Cable, Lib Dem leader.

Steven Agnew said: “The Westminster engagements involved a delegation of local parties, representing pro Remain Northern Ireland public opinion.

“Labour, the Liberal Democrats as well as the Welsh and Scottish nationalist parties were very receptive to our position.

“They understand the urgent need to protect the economic, social and security interests of Northern Ireland in the face of a right wing push for a crash out of the European Union.

“My message to the Westminster delegations was that a People’s Vote is the only way to maintain the democratic tradition of proper Parliamentary and public scrutiny of the big decisions made by government.

“Support for a People’s Vote has shifted up several notches – people must have the final say on any Brexit deal.”
