Steven Agnew speaks in support of older carers

Steven Agnew MLA attended an event held by Bangor-based Positive Futures as part of Carers Week.

“It was humbling to hear the stories of parents who care for their grown up children and the challenges they face as they grow older”, he said.

“The Better Futures Project has clearly made a huge difference to the lives of many people, allowing parents to feel supported and valued, often enabling them to make plans for the future that will ensure their children continue to be looked after.

“There is clearly a need for this project. Given that older carers in Northern Ireland contributed £1.02 billion to the economy through unpaid caring in 2012, I would hope that the small amount of funding required to continue this service could be found within the health budget”.

The Better Futures project, supported by the Big Lottery Fund, provides a mixture of practical support, information and planning for the future to help older carers take control and make plans for the future with their son or daughter with a learning disability.
