Steven Agnew praises PSNI plans for Pride attendance

Wednesday 02 August 2017

Green Party leader Steven Agnew has defended plans for the PSNI to take part in the Pride March on Saturday.

The North Down MLA said: “The attendance of PSNI officers is entirely appropriate. Deputy Chief Constable Drew Harris has been very clear that there is a policing purpose for attendance.

“DCC Harris has described Pride as an engagement opportunity aimed at dealing with hate crimes committed against the LGBTQ community.

“Last year there were 162 hate crimes motivated by homophobia in Northern Ireland and an additional 129 homophobic incidents.

“Furthermore, we know that many more homophobic hate crime and incidents go unreported.

“The PSNI must do everything possible to engage with the LGBTQ community and promote the reporting of all hate crime.”

Steven Agnew concluded:

“Therefore, I will be glad to see PSNI officers at the parade on Saturday and fully support DCC Harris in his rationale for attendance.”
