Steven Agnew MLA says UK floundering over draft EU agreement

Wednesday February 28 2018

Green Party leader Steven Agnew has warned that the UK government appears to have been left floundering following the publication of the EU Draft Agreement.

“Yet again, the UK seems to have painted itself into a corner and certainly doesn’t seem to have placed the stability of Northern Ireland high on its list of priorities,” the North Down MLA said.

“We heard all about this apparently successful negotiation that was concluded in December and yet here we are once again. The decision on what happens to Northern Ireland can’t be kicked down the road again.

“The Prime Minister and the DUP appear to be very indignant about the deal that has been published by the EU – but I would say to them that this is the outworking of Brexit. This is what a full hard Brexit looks like.

“If they can’t countenance Northern Ireland staying in the Customs Union, or an as-if version of that, and they can’t countenance a hard border, then I would challenge them to outline a third option that works for Northern Ireland and its people, who did not vote for Brexit.

“There is only so far that sleight of hand can take you and after that you have to pin your colours to the mast. Our position is and has always been that the best and fairest option for everyone is for the whole of the UK to remain in the Customs Union.”
