Steven Agnew – independent mediator suggested 18 months ago, time to act

Monday 10 September 2017

Steven Agnew MLA commented on proposals for an independent mediator to kick start the talks process, saying:

“Karen Bradley MP might want to dust off any handover notes left by her predecessor James Brokenshire MP.

“The Green Party urged James Brokenshire to bring in an independent mediator for inclusive talks back in March 2017.

“Mr Brokenshire tinkered around the edges at a failed talks process and 18 months later Sinn Fein and the DUP are as pugnacious as ever.

“In those 18 months our hospital waiting lists have grown, schools budgets are under more pressure than ever and there is a paralysis of decision making.

“Karen Bradley is more than welcome to revisit our shortlist of possible independent talks chairs.”

The Green Party leader concluded:

“She may have needed time to get up to speed with her NIO brief, but the time is now for the Secretary of State to make a meaningful bid to resolve the current impasse.”
