Steven Agnew in Taoiseach Brexit briefing

Thursday 15 November 2018

Steven Agnew is due to meet the Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar in Dublin later today (Thursday 15 November) as part of a delegation of pro Remain Northern Ireland parties.

The Dublin meeting follows an engagement with Michel Barnier and Guy Verhofstadt in Brussels in October as well as a meeting with Westminster parties, including Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and Lib Dem chief, Vince Cable earlier this week.

Steven Agnew said of the meeting with Mr Varadkar: “I welcome the fact that the draft Brexit deal means no hard border on or between these islands.

“I will urge Mr Varadkar to use his influence within the EU27 to ensure that the rights and interests of the people of Northern Ireland are protected throughout the Brexit process.

“I am also encouraged that Irish Green Party TDs Catherine Martin and Eamon Ryan are doing their bit to ensure that the Irish government protects the Good Friday Agreement across the negotiations.

“It has been helpful that the Eamon and Catherine have backed their Green Party counterparts in Northern Ireland and England and Wales in backing a People’s Vote for the people of the UK on any final Brexit deal.”
