Shock over Dalradian policing costs

West Tyrone Green Party representative Ciaran McClean has today, Wednesday, 17 August 2016, criticised the level of public subsidy for Dalradian’s mining operations at Curraghinalt,

His comments come as it was revealed that policing costs are almost £500,000.

West Tyrone representative Ciaran McClean said,

“The amount of public money underwriting and subsidising Dalradian’s operations is constantly rising and now includes operating grants from Invest NI of more than £330,000 and I am shocked that policing costs are in excess of £400,000 over nine months.

“As essential public services are stripped from West Tyrone, Dalradian are cashing in on Executive funding despite the weight of community support going against their mine and cyanide processing plant in Greencastle.”

“That the PSNI refuses to provide any detail as to the make-up of these costs and their projected future impact on the policing budget is very worrying indeed. The impression is being given that Dalradian has been given a blank cheque signed by the Northern Ireland Executive.

“I will be writing to the Chief Constable to ascertain how almost half a million pounds has been allocated policing a business. I call on Fermanagh and Omagh Policing and Community Safety Partnership to perform their statutory duty to hold the PSNI to account at a local level by demanding details on the costs accrued to the policing budget by this multinational corporation.

“It is only last year that a CCTV public safety programme in Omagh was under threat due to policing budget constraints. Dalradian’s activities are precluding the PSNI from carrying out normative policing duties and that should not be the case.

“The interests of corporations and foreign investors are increasingly being put ahead of the concerns of ordinary citizens throughout Northern Ireland.

“Sustainable development of the local economy in West Tyrone is achieved through supporting local business and spending money within the local economy. Dalradian is systematically taking money, resources and value out of the economy, with little sign of giving anything back.”
